Delaware is home to over 170,000 Medicare beneficiaries. Medicare plans offer residents the same great coverage that supplements do in every other state. You can choose from among the 10 standardized plans. The coverage works alongside your Original Medicare coverage and leaves you with little out of pocket.

Delaware Medicare Supplements

One great feature of all Medicare supplements is that you can see any doctor that accepts Medicare. You are not limited to any networks. No matter which company you choose, you can see any doctor that participates in Medicare. Considering that Medicare has over 800,000 providers, you will have great choices for your medical care.

People who enroll in Delaware Medicare supplements can set up a Part D drug plan as well to cover medication needs. This is a standalone pharmacy card that you present to your pharmacist. Part D coverage gives you access to medications at a copay rate instead of at full price.

There are a number of great insurance companies offering plans in Delaware, including Aetna American Retirement Life (Cigna) and Omaha Insurance Company.

Medicare Under 65 in Delaware

Senate Bill 42 requires that insurance carriers who offer Medicare supplements to people age 65 and older, must also offer the same policies to people under 65. However, premiums for people under 65 are often much higher than for people age 65 and older. This is because people under 65 have health conditions that qualified them for Medicare. This often causes higher loss ratios for the carrier, and they must raise rates to stay ahead.

If you find that Medicare supplements are out of your budget, then a Medicare Advantage plan might be a better fit.

Medicare Advantage Plans in Delaware

Some people prefer to get their insurance through a Part C Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Advantage plans in Delaware are private plans that provide you the same benefits as Original Medicare. These plans have smaller networks, but often also have lower premiums. Delaware has several Medicare Advantage plans operating in Kent, New Castle and Sussex counties.

With any Medicare Advantage plan, you must still pay your Medicare Part B premium, but often Part D is included. You will pay copays for various medical services. Each plan has its own network, drug formulary and Summary of Benefits that you can review before enrolling. Be sure to check with your doctors to find out if they are in the network.

When you join a Medicare Advantage plan, you are enrolling for the rest of the calendar year. You cannot leave the plan until the Annual Election Period in the fall unless there is a special circumstance.

Prescription Assistant in Delaware

The Delaware Prescription Assistance Program provides up to $3000 annually to assist low-income people with drug costs. Eligible persons will have a small copay, and must enroll in Part D to take advantage of the program. You can purchase a Part D drug plans from a wide variety of carriers. We recommend you use the Medicare Plan Finder Tool to see which one will be most cost effective for you.
