Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about Medicare or Medicare Supplement Insurance? You’ve come to the right place. Our licensed agents are here to help you understand your options at no cost to you.

What is Medicare?

Medicare is the U.S. government health insurance program created in 1965, also known as Original Medicare. It is made up of two parts:

  • Part A covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and home health care.
  • Part B covers preventive care, doctor visits, lab tests, durable medical equipment, supplies, and more.

Both parts include deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments for most services. Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) can help fill in these out-of-pocket costs.

What is Medigap Insurance?

Medigap is another name for Medicare Supplement Insurance — a private insurance policy that helps cover the gaps in cost-sharing that Original Medicare doesn’t fully pay, such as deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.

Why do I need Medicare Supplement Insurance?

Original Medicare helps cover many medical expenses, but it does not pay all costs. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan can help cover the remaining out-of-pocket expenses Medicare leaves behind. Without a supplement plan, those costs can add up quickly, especially if you have frequent doctor visits, hospitalizations, or ongoing medical needs.

What is The Benefit Link?

The Benefit Link was founded in January 2007 by Diana Scothorn, who has dedicated her career to helping seniors in the Medicare market. Our licensed insurance agents bring decades of combined experience helping clients understand Medicare and find the right Medicare Supplement coverage for their situation.

We provide access to all major insurance carriers and work with you to analyze which companies and plans may best fit your needs — at no cost to you.

Who is eligible for Medicare Supplement Insurance?

You are generally eligible for a Medicare Supplement plan if you are:

  • Enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B
  • A U.S. citizen or legal resident for at least five continuous years
  • Age 65 or older (or under 65 if you qualify due to a disability)

What is Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B?

When you qualify for Medicare, you enroll in Part A and Part B:

  • Medicare Part A generally helps pay your costs as a hospital inpatient, including skilled nursing facility stays.
  • Medicare Part B may help pay for doctor visits, preventive services, lab tests, medical equipment, supplies, and more.

Why would I need a supplement to Medicare if I already have Medicare?

Medicare Supplement plans help cover the costs of Medicare-related expenses that Original Medicare does not fully pay — such as copays and coinsurance. For example, a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan can help cover charges that Medicare only partially covers. Without a supplement, these out-of-pocket costs can become a significant financial burden.

How much does a Medicare Supplement plan cost?

Plan premiums vary depending on your age, location, the plan type you choose, and in some cases your medical history. Our agents can provide you with a free, no-obligation quote and help you compare options from all major carriers to find the best value for your situation.

What other services does The Benefit Link provide?

In addition to Medicare Supplement Insurance, we provide access to:

  • Medicare Part D — Prescription drug plans
  • Dental, Vision, and Hearing insurance
  • Life Insurance — including whole life policies for final expense planning

There is no charge to clients for our services. We are honored to help guide you through the process.

What is Medicare Part C?

Medicare Part C, also called Medicare Advantage, is an alternative to Original Medicare offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Instead of receiving benefits through Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you receive them through the private plan.

Important things to know about Medicare Advantage plans:

  • They set their own premiums, deductibles, and cost-sharing amounts
  • They may require referrals to see specialists
  • They typically limit your choice of doctors and facilities to an in-network group
  • They may require prior authorization for certain services

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans and Medicare Advantage plans are different products and generally cannot be used together. Our agents can help you understand which type of coverage best suits your needs.
