Medicare Supplement Plans in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania Medicare plans include Medicare supplements, Medicare Advantage plans and Part D drug options. The purpose of Pennsylvania Medicare supplements is to pay for the gaps in Medicare so that you don’t have to.

Pennsylvania Medicare supplement plans help to pay for both your hospital and outpatient deductibles. They can also cover your copays and coinsurance for both inpatient stay and regular medical care.

Let’s take a look at your PA Medicare Supplement options.

Pennsylvania Medicare Supplements

There are 10 Pennsylvania Medicare supplement plans, just as there are in other states. Medicare set the summary of benefits in each of these plans. For example, if you buy a Pennsylvania Medicare Supplement Plan D, you will find that it has exactly the same benefits whether you buy it from one insurance company or another. This allows you to shop for a plan based on who offers the most competitive rates and stable rate history in your area.

Pennsylvania Medicare supplements are a great fit for people who would enjoy the peace of mind that comes from a plan that uses a nationwide network (the Medicare network). It provides coverage whether you are at home, or visiting friends and family in other states.

Best Medicare Supplement Plans in Pennsylvania

Many people ask us our opinion on who offers the best Medicare supplement plan in Pennsylvania. Fortunately, Medicare took the work out of that for us when they standardized the plan. Each plan covers a certain set of benefits. This makes it easier to compare between carriers. For example, Medigap Plan A covers your 20% outpatient co-insurance but leaves the deductibles and excess charges for you.

Pennsylvania Medicare Supplement Plan F, however, covers all of the gaps in Medicare. You will have no copays or out-of-pocket spending for any Medicare-covered service with this plan. There are a number of other options in between, such as Plan G and Plan N. Medicare Supplement Plan N gives you lower premiums because you will pay your own Part B deductible and excess charges.

However, state law in Pennsylvania prohibits doctors from charging you excess charges. An excess charge is when a doctor bills you 15% higher than Medicare’s approved amount. Normally you would owe this, but not in Pennsylvania. This might make Plan N a good buy for you if you don’t travel and plan to only treat in your home state.

Keep in mind that Pennsylvania Medicare supplements do not include drug coverage though. You can purchase an inexpensive Medicare Part D policy to help you with your prescription drugs.

Pennsylvania Medicare Supplement Companies

Our agency works with over 30 insurance companies that offer plans across the United States.  We can check rates for various carriers such as Aetna or Cigna. We generally recommend looking for carriers that have an A or A+ financial rating. This means the carriers have millions of dollars in reserves to pay out on claims if necessary.

Another thing to look at is the carrier’s rate increase history. Have their rate increases been manageable from year to year or are they double-digits every time? Our software can provide this data for the various carriers offering Medicare plans in your area.
