Medicare Supplement Plans Ohio

Ohio Medicare plans such as Medicare supplement plans and Advantage plans are available to eligible individuals when they age into Medicare at age 65. There are federal guidelines about how and when Medicare supplements must offer plans to Medicare beneficiaries.

However, Medicare also allows states to set their own rules about whether they will sell Medigap policies to people who qualify for Medicare early due to Medicare disability.

Who Qualifies for Medicare Supplement Plans in Ohio?

People in Ohio who are 65 or older qualify to apply for a Medicare Supplement. (These are also called Medigap plans). However, Ohio does not require carriers to offer Medigap plans to people under age 65 who have qualified due to a disability.

What this means is that you may not be eligible for a supplement until you turn 65. In the meantime, you will need to look at Ohio Medicare Advantage plans for your coverage. Medicare Advantage plans are easier to qualify for because they have only one health question.

Choosing the Right Ohio Medicare Supplement

Finding an Ohio Medigap plan that meets your needs is relatively easy. You can find great information on this website about Medicare supplement plans and how they work to fill in the gaps in Medicare. The three most popular Ohio Medicare plans are Plan F, Plan G and Plan N. Each Medigap plan offers a different set of benefits, with Plan F being the most comprehensive.

You’ll want to compare the prices as well as the financial ratings of each Ohio Medicare supplement insurance company. Once you have identified the three companies with the most competitive price for the plan you want, there is one more step. It’s important that you find out about each company’s rate increase histories. All Medigap companies have rate increases from year to year. Choosing a carrier that has reasonable and steady increases is what you want. Avoid carriers whose rate jumps significantly after the first year.

We should also add that state law in Ohio prohibits doctors from charging you excess charges. An excess charge is when a provider bills you up to 15% more than what Medicare allows. In most states, you would be responsible for that difference. However, in Ohio, excess charges are prohibited. Consider Medigap Plan N if you will only be seeking treatment in your home state. (Plan N has lower premiums than Plan G partly because you agree to pay your own excess charges.)

If you find that Medicare Supplement Plans Ohio are out of your budget range, then look into Medicare Advantage plans in Ohio.
