Maine Medicare Plans
At the Benefit Link we work with great insurance companies offering Medicare Supplement plans for Maine residents.
Many offer the most popular plans like Plan F and Plan G. Let us assist with the basics. Maine Medicare Plans include 10 standardized options, lettered A – N. Each insurance company must offer at least Plan A, but companies can offer any of the other plans as well.
Our agency works with some of the best Maine Medicare Plan F and Plan G insurance companies, such as Aetna, Bankers Fidelity, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, Mutual of Omaha, and Transamerica.

Medicare Supplements in Maine have special enrollment rules which are specific only to the state of Maine. While all states follow federal requirements to give beneficiaries an open enrollment period when they first get Medicare Part B, Maine also requires that each insurance company offer Medigap Plan A for sale to anyone, regardless of health conditions, during one month each year. This “guaranteed-issue” period is determined by the insurance carrier, and it’s important to understand that the carriers are not required to offer more comprehensive plans, like Medigap Plan F, during this window.
Creditable Coverage for Maine Medicare Supplements
Another unique rule that is in place in Maine, is that 90-day creditable coverage window. If you have never gone without Medicare supplemental coverage for more than 90 days, then the insurance companies offering Medicare supplements must provide you a supplement policy if you apply for one. For this reason, it is advisable never to have any significant gaps in coverage.
The state of Maine also stipulates that for people who have creditable coverage with no breaks longer than 90 days, then you can change your Medigap policy as long as you move to a policy with equal or lesser benefits than your current policy. For example, if you have Medicare Supplement Plan F, which is the most comprehensive supplement, you could change fairly easily to a Medicare Supplement Plan G or N, which have lesser benefits. In reverse, however – when you are increasing our benefits – your change would require you to pass the carrier’s medical health underwriting.
