What Is Short Term Care Insurance?

Short Term Care Insurance is a type of policy that will help cover custodial, skilled nursing and home health care. This type of policy is similar to the more traditional Long Term Care, but with a few key differences. In order to begin using your coverage, you would have to fail to accomplish 2 of the 6 Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) which are bathing, dressing, eating, getting in or out of bed or chair, moving around, and using the bathroom.

Why You Need Short Term Care Insurance:

Among Adults Aged 65+:

Key Facts To Consider:

*Medicare Part A only covers Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) care if all of the following are true:

  1.  The individual has days available to use in the benefit period.
  2. The individual’s doctor has ordered daily skilled care delivered by, or under the supervision of, skilled personnel.
  3. The skilled care is for a hospital-related medical condition and is provided in a Medicare-certified Skilled Nursing Facility.
  4.  The SNF admission takes place within 30 days of a medically necessary hospital stay of 3 consecutive days (also known as the 3-day rule). The discharge day and any pre-admission time spent in the emergency room or outpatient observation do not count toward the 3-day rule.

There are often financial implications for the individual receiving care and their family.

  1.  78% of those caring for a loved one report having out-of-pocket expenses and spend an average of 26% of their income on caregiving activities.
  2. 62% say it was a “somewhat difficult” and 26% say it was “very difficult” to afford a facility that met their needs or their loved ones’ needs.
  3. 56% of those paying for care or providing care for themselves or a loved one had to reduce spending on food, clothing, or basic household items and 33% had trouble paying rent/mortgage or utilities.
  4.  53% of working caregivers have experienced at least one work related impact because of their caregiving. Taking time off (both paid and unpaid) and working different hours are the most common ways that caregiving affects work.
  5. 50% of those who received or had a loved one who received paid custodial care said it was “difficult” to afford.
