How to Get
Dental & Vision

Original Medicare offers great Medical coverage, and offers some dental coverage that you get while in the hospital if you need to have emergency or complicated dental procedures. However, Medicare does not cover most routine dental care, dental procedures or supplies, like cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions, dentures, dental plates, or other dental devices. Therefore, you can still get dental and vision covered through another plan such as a separate Dental and Vision plan.

Dental Coverage

Most individuals choose a standalone dental insurance plan for routine dental coverage. Keep in mind, Original Medicare will provide coverage for dental services if they are deemed medically necessary to benefit the beneficiary’s overall health. Contact The Benefit Link for information on Dental plans which can cover most dental services, including cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions, dentures and other dental devices.

Vision Coverage

When it comes to vision services, there are some specific ways that your Part B portion of Original Medicare can assist you. For example, eye prostheses are covered for participants who qualify due to the loss of an eye or shrinkage resulting from trauma, surgical removal, or birth defects. Replacements may also be covered in this case.

If you are an individual with a high risk for glaucoma, Part B will also cover screenings every 12 months. Other diagnostic tests and disease treatments may be covered as well.

Following cataract surgery, Medicare will also pay for one standard pair of either contact lenses or glasses. This benefit is typically only available once per lifetime and does not include upgraded frames.

While these benefits are certainly necessary, Medicare does not cover some routine vision items. Most people are happy to find that a standalone vision plan offering such items as glasses and contacts, is inexpensive and offers the amount of coverage they need.
